11/11/2007 Ohio Bill 116-Social Security Benefits No longer Reduce Unemployment $
Columbus, Ohio – Governor Ted Strickland signed Senate Bill 116 on Sunday, Nov.11.
SB 116, sponsored by state Senator Joy Padgett, immediately ends the reduction of unemployment compensation benefits by the amount of Social Security an individual receives when utilizing both of these programs.
“This is a matter of basic fairness for Ohio seniors,” Strickland said. “I’m happy to sign this long-overdue legislation to ensure that Ohio’s seniors receive benefits they are due.”
Strickland signed SB 116 on a Sunday because an emergency clause included in the bill will make the bill go into effect immediately. Sundays are the first day of the unemployment compensation benefit week and by signing the bill on a Sunday the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services will ensure a smooth and cost-effective implementation of the offset.
